    Description

This is a reproduction of a 50 cent Colonial "paper coin" and a reproduction Colonial half dollar.
Before the Revolutionary War, hard currency (coin) was very rare.  Most people used Spanish milled dollars, which they cut into eighths and used in business transactions.
During the War, coins and eighths were hard to come by, so the state governments and American Congress issued their own paper money to conduct trade.  In order to finance the War, the Continental Congress printed massive amounts of currency, which flooded the market and drove down the value of the "Continentals," as they were known.
Continental Coin - A replica of the first silver dollar sized coin ever made for the United States, this coin was produced in three different metals:  pewter, silver and brass.  The chain link on the reverse side represents the newly united colonies, with the inscription "We Are One."
Continental Note - Because of the rampant inflation of this note, the phrase "not worth a Continental" became prevalent in the new America.  Note that this bill displays the name "United States."  Issues printed before 1777 read "United Colonies."
    Note:  THESE ARE REPRODUCTIONS.
